Week 1 Day 4 Reflection (24/05/2018)

We started off our day looking at individual blogs and critiquing content and organization. We then progressed to looking at some professional websites of past Ph.D. students, and we were asked to give opinions on how we can improve it.

We were also given the task of creating our own professional websites and suggested website hosting services included WordPress or Wix (buying individual domains will be a good idea to have a lasting website).

Our next activity was Mobile Programming, and we were required to download and use the Android Studio IDE. Java is the primary language in Android app development, so I will need to incorporate some languages to do some C++ to Java conversion or learn Java from scratch which wouldn’t be that difficult.

After Lunch, we began our elevator pitch class, which entails introducing ourselves and where we come from; what our broader research area is; what is the problem; why it is important; how I will address it; and ending it with an interesting question or intriguing contribution.

Elevated Pitch;

My name is Emmanuel Klutse, a rising Sophomore at Tougaloo College majoring in Computer Science. My desired branch of Computer Science is research, and I like to focus on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence; I want to improve automated translation, including translating one programming language into another one (for instance, SQL to Python).

Dr. Tom introduced us to qualitative data analysis; we used a platform called Dedoose with affinity diagrams based on Grounded Theory to analyzing qualitative and mixed methods research with text, photos, audio, videos, spreadsheet data and more. Other professors and Ph.D. students came to introduce their projects.
