W4

Hello everyone.

I want to start this post by saying thanks, Dr. Siek for an amazing dinner last Saturday. We should do it again. And not just the food, but just talking to everyone, seeing the dog steal food, and playing games, all of it was amazing.

Dedoose:

This week started out with a lot of work. Gabby, Tom, and I worked hard segmenting the patients data on dedoose, and we also created codes that we agreed represented the data. We also worked on the medical providers data. We segmented it and cut it up. On Tuesday we met with Dr. Clawson, and he made very good suggesting on how to proceed. However, he pointed out that we did things a little backwards because we should have started by uploading the patients data into dedoose instead of doing it on physical paper first and coming up with the themes. He said that we could keep doing it the way we did it, but it was not the formal way to do it. We decided that we wanted to take this new approach for the medical providers data. We also have been working on the providers data, which has been segmented in dedoose already. We finally got to take the interrater test for the patients data. It was a struggle figuring out the proper way to take the exam.

Deliverables

This week we had more deliberables than last week. We had to outline the abstract, and write the draft of the introduction. Gabby and I split the task, she worked on the introduction while I worked on the abstract, then we revised each other’s work. We also had to peer review the related work and methods drafts of another pair’s paper. This was a new experience for me, but it was not as hard as I thought it would be. We also had to take a plagiarism test. The test consisted of the questions. Each questions had an original text and a student version, the we had to discern if the students version was word-by-word plagiarism, paraphrasing plagiarism, or not plagiarism. Nine out of ten was a requirement to pass the test. I passed it in the first try.

Moving forward

Next week we plan to draft an IRB for out focus group, write the draft for our abstract, peer review the introduction of another pair’s paper, and outline the findings and discussions. Next week we have the most deliverable according to the Deliverables table provided by Dr. Siek. We also need to keep iterating over the rest of our paper and fix the mistakes pointed out in our peer review. Also next week, Gabby and I plan to meet with Tom to discuss the results of out iterrater tests, and also talk about how we want to write our results. We have so much data that we want to maybe write two papers. So we have to discuss the data that we want to show in the results for the first paper. Next week we also need to meet with our faculty mentors and discuss the work we’ve done. In addition, next week we have to start working on our personal websites. This is going to be a new experience for me, and I am excited about it.

This weekend

There is many events going on in Bloomington this weekend. I plan to go out and enjoy some of them such as Taste of Bloomington, and some art shows… Also, my family is going to come visit me tomorrow Saturday, so I am very excited about that. We shall have a good time.

Until next time.
