Entry 5

On Friday we had a relatively short, but important class session.  We began our day with a group presentation where each of our mentors explained what they worked on that week.  This is going to be our normal Friday routine from here on out, but now each of us is going to present our weekly activities.   Then, we broke into our research groups and met with our mentors to get advised on what we are going to be doing for the remainder of our time at REU ProHealth.  Kate and I met with Nandini and she talked to us about the things we will be learning such as the Bayesian network, and how we are going to be using mathematical models as such to make accurate assumptions for our project.  Also, Kate and I were fortune enough to receive two important readings from Nandini, about our project.  Although, the articles were pretty challenging to fully understand, they still helped me gain a general sense of what we will being doing in the coming weeks.  After, Nandini helped us prepare for our thirty second elevator speech that we presented at the end of our session.  I thought my elevator speech was written well, but while I was presenting it in front of the group I let my nerves get the best of me which took a way from my overall performance.  This showed me that I need to work on my presentation skills, which I will be doing in the coming weeks.  As I like to do, I’m going to end my post on a positive note and give a huge congratulations to my partner Kate Sanders for coming in second place in the elevator speech competition! Wooohooo, Go Kate!!!
