I Try – Day 3

This Morning
This morning I went to the gym for a quick workout. Then we started the day with a review of how to use Share LaTeX. Share LaTeX is pretty interesting because it is essentially coding for word documents. I learned how to separate different parts of the code and then input them to create the final product. Here are my notes. Here is my product. Later, Anna gave a presentation on qualitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is mainly used for exploratory research to determine patterns in thoughts and behaviors. Here are some of my notes. Then Ben Jelen taught us a little more about background literature and summaries ( notes here).

Summary of Mobile Collocated Interactions: From Smartphones to Wearables

Lucero, A., Clawson, J., Lyons, K., Fischer, J. E., Ashbrook, D., & Robinson, S. (n.d.). Mobile Collocated Interactions: From Smartphones to Wearables. https://doi.org/10.1145/2702613.2702649

Mobile Collocated Interactions: From Smartphones to Wearables explores the potential for extending mobile collocated interactions to the use of wearable devices. Mobile collocated interactions involve situations in which technology is used to create a collective experience or accomplish a shared goal.  A workshop was held with  researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to identify opportunities for mobile collocated interactions with wearable devices and investigate how devices could potentially interact in a group environment. The findings are not yet published. Most of the recent research in the field of mobile collocated interactions is with smartphones and tablets rather than with mobile or wearable technology, so this research workshop is necessary as wearable technology is trending.

My Thoughts
I thought this was a very interesting piece and seemed to be a reasonable proposal for a challenging problem, as wearable technology is becoming more popular. After reading the article I wanted to look further into “mobile collocated interactions” and could start by reading Understanding Mobile Notification Management in Collocated Groups or Mobile collocated interactions: taking an offline break together.

This Afternoon
After a delicious lunch at Noodles and Company (I had the Penne Rosa), Ben Jelen taught us a little more about Arduino. It was pretty fun playing the Harry Potter theme song and coordinating the lights. Later, Dr. Siek taught us about making press releases and videos (see notes). We also heard about Fernando’s project this summer. The project involves seeking out HIV patients in chatrooms to assess their need for a technological intervention.

After Work
After work I headed back to the apartment and worked a bit more on the Lilypad Adrino Project. I created a press release and video about how our Adrino can function as a nightlight. I also worked a bit more on the CITI trainings.
