First week, day one.

Summary of Ben’s paper.

Ben’s paper “Empowering Older Adult Crafters to Electronically Enhance Artifacts for Health” presents an idea of helping older adults to improve their health by combining their crafting skills with technology. Older adults who are 65 years or older were recruited from Bloomington area and were asked to fill out a survey. Those older adults taught researchers about knitting and crafting whereas researchers taught them the skills related to small electronics. Main contribution of this research is that it helped the researchers to closely identify the impact of technology in older adults. In my opinion this project is important because most old people are unable to completely take care of themselves and according to the data provided by cms, “Per person personal health care spending for the 65 and older population was $18,988 in 2012,  approximately 3 times the spending per working-age person ($6,632)” which is quiet a lot. With around 45 million elderly population in USA, huge amount of money can be saved if we come up with a better approach to encourage older people to stay healthy. reference : Ben Jalen, Katie Siek”Empowering Older Adult Crafters to Electronically Enhance Artifacts for Health”

Day in short

It was the first day of our summer research in Indiana University. Everything went pretty well. We started our day with a short meeting with some officials in Willkie center then we had a campus tour. Then, we had lunch with our mentors and professors. After lunch we had an orientation with Dr. Siek where we were detailed about the procedures and timetables we will be following for the whole summer. After few hours inside the room Ciabhan notified us about a gas leakage warning so we had to walk out of the building, hence we decided to take a short walk.

We returned after the warning was gone and after few minutes of talk we did wall sitting which was pretty fun. Ben explained his research to us along with the types of citations and citation managers that are used in research papers. After all, we got an assignment and time table for the next day.

Research manager:

I will use Mendely to manage citations. I studied few articles online and based on recommendations by some users I think it will be the best one for me. It has many advantages over other citation mangers that I found in the internet.
