Overview
This week felt very short since Monday was the Fourth of July!

My partner and I both decided to work during the weekend on finalizing the Facebook permissions and at last, we submitted them. We hope to here back soon so that we may begin building the app on Facebook as soon as possible. At the begin of this program we aimed to have a developed web based application but with further consideration of the study, we felt as though it would be best to break it into two parts. This was probably for the best because know everything seems more straight forward and doable .

So we submitted the Facebook permissions request. Facebook also required that we have a link to a privacy page explaining the study (http://cgi.sice.indiana.edu/~gkbastin/). We created this via IU server used for research purposes (currently can’t remember the name of server).  The page just states what that all information collected will be kept confidential and that it would be used solely for research. When ever we receive approval for the IRB, we will most likely put a downloadable version on the web page for those interested.

We made a few  changes to our paper specifically the methods section. Since we were able to finalize the three scenarios, we included them in our paper and also gave more in-depth explanation as to why they mattered.  We over looked our related works section which so far still supports what we are doing in this study. Patrick informed us that this part of the paper sometimes changes as the study continues since they sometimes change direction like ours. In the final weeks we plan on over looking this section especially to ensure everything makes sense.

Paper: 2017CHI_BastinPereira_RareDiseaseFacebookApp (2)

This week we were also able to receive feedback from Patrick and Fernando on the survey questions. We decided to change a few and also make more questions aiming for a longer survey than we previously had which was about 20 minutes, at least. We put the questions into Google Survey because we felt that since its a familiar interface, participants would feel more comfortable using it.

We also brainstormed on where we may find these participants and so far the ideas seem promising. By the end of next week   or mid, we should have participants taking the survey so that we may start reviewing the data and begin analysis.

Lightning Talk

When developing our lightening talk we focused on the key elements that were necessary for people to know in order to understand what we are doing. We used a few facts listed in our paper to help us with the introduction and then just drafted out the first and made word changes. the final draft of the lightning talk can be found here LighteningtalkforRareDisease. The paragraph break stands for thirty seconds. We didn’t really plan this when creating the talk. We just created the talk, timed it for one minute, and then found the best place to split it into two parts.

Meetings this week

This weeks meeting was mostly spent reviewing the survey draft and project direction. The surveys needed a lot of iteration but thats okay because its nice to receive feedback so that we may improve our skills. We changed the survey and also added more questions. In the meeting we decided to use Google Survey because of its familiar and easy to understand interface. WE made it a goal to have participants taking the survey by next week so that we may finish the paper on time and also this part of the study.
