Week Six: Monday, June 26th – Friday, July 1st

 Weekly Reflection

This week was quite busy for Devon and I.  This week Devon and I mostly worked on the background stuff for our app.  By that I mean that we worked on the difficult tasks that the user will not notice.  Devon is working on the necessary PHP scripts to finish syncing the databases.  I started the alarm algorithm that configures when the user will receive the survey.  It is a lot more difficult to code than we had originally thought and will take a lot of time to complete.  Towards the end of the week we had issues with our AutoStart Java class, which I will give more detail of in the daily reflections section.  Overall, this week was a bit frustrating.  Despite the fact that I began working 3/5 days at or before 7am, I feel like we should be making more progress than we are and I feel guilty that we did not finish the app this week.  Luckily at our last meeting, Dr. Connelly said that we could cut off a week of beta testing to allow more time for the completion of the app, so hopefully we will be done next week.

 Daily Reflections

Saturday

While Saturday was not in the work week, it is notable to mention because I got to see my mom and my pets!!  I haven’t been home in over 3 months, so my mom stopped in Bloomington on her way to Arkansas with the pets to finalize the move from Boston to Arkansas.  Upon suggestions from Dr. Katie Siek of where to go to eat, my mom and I went to Feast for brunch and Farm for dinner, both of which were good.  We even got to bring Emma with us to brunch and she got some steak so she was happy.  I included a picture below.

Monday

I began the day working on some of the ProHealth deliverables for the week.  Later on in the day I began the daunting task of the alarm algorithm.  I spent a while on the algorithm, completing the pseudo code but getting errors with the implementation.  I decided to walk away from it after four hours and would pick it back up on Tuesday,  I finished off the day doing some research for our paper.  It was Nigel’s birthday, so a bunch of us went out to Asuka for dinner to celebrate, which is shown below.

Tuesday

I began the day updating Android Studio and my computer.  Once the updates finally completed, I went back to doing some research for our paper.  We were emailed our peer review feedback, so I then read through it.  Then it was back to the alarm algorithm.  I was getting really frustrated so I started the implementation over again, keeping the pseudo code.  After Tuesday I did not work on the algorithm again alone as it was apparent it was a two person task, so Devon and I worked on it for a bit later in the week.  I ended the day with the annual SUR-REU reception.  The interim Dean of SOIC came and gave a talk at the reception.  It was really nice to meet other REU students at IU for the summer and the dean’s talk was quite eloquent and inspiring.

Wednesday

Wednesday was an all around very busy day.  I began by updating our task log.  Once that was finished, Devon and I worked on our reviewer response table, which can be found in the links section.  From there Devon and I worked on PHP until our meeting with Majdah.  Professional pictures were taking place so I prepared for those and then went downstairs to take them.  Everyone was dressed up for the pictures and looked really nice.  Then we had our workshop, which talked about posters and lightning talks.  Devon and I will be completing a poster and lightning talk next week.

Thursday

Devon and I worked on various tasks in the morning, but around 11am was when I started trouble shooting AutoStart.  I had to do a lot of research on websites like StackOverflow and ultimately my research came up empty as I was not able to figure out the problem after spending many hours on it.

Friday

Friday is our day of meetings.  Devon and I will be in meetings for most of the morning with Dr. Connelly, Majdah, and the ProHealth group.  Hopefully they will all go well and will lead to a good start of the holiday weekend.
