Week Four: Monday, June 13th – Friday, June 17th

 Weekly Reflection

Devon and I got a lot accomplished this week.  We completed the ProHealth deliverables on time and got a solid step further in the implementation of the ESM App.  We also continued to wear the Microsoft Band 2 and test its functionality.  One of the highlights of the week was definitely getting Luke’s code to run.  We continued to keep track of our hours and I even color coded the task log (shown below).  In addition to everything work related there were also two birthdays this week, so a lot of us went out to celebrate.  Each day is detailed below.

Color Coded Task Log

The color coded task log.  Green is everything to do with the application, while blue is all of the ProHealth deliverables.  Red is all of the articles and readings we have, and finally purple means everything to do with meetings.

Daily Activities

Saturday

We started out the week on Saturday with a barbecue at Dr. Katie Siek’s house.  It was so much fun and the food was amazing.  The macaroni and cheese was probably my favorite.  It was on point and I would definitely want the recipe.  I also got to meet Ginger, Dr. Siek’s Golden Retriever puppy.  Golden Retrievers are my favorite breed of dog.  I’m a little bias though because I do own one.  My dog’s name is Emma and she is an eight year old Golden Retriever mix.   Ginger made me have serious Emma withdrawals, but it is okay because I will get to see Emma the weekend of the 25th when my mom comes to visit with all of my pets (I also have three cats: Olivia, Jackson, and Kiera Rose).   It was so nice of Dr. Siek to have us over to her house.  At the end of the barbecue we all decided to take a group picture (below).

Monday

Monday was really the beginning of our week of progression.  Monday was a long day for us as we got into the office early and had a late meeting.  We completed most of the ProHealth deliverables on this day and uploaded the paper we have been working on for peer review.  We should get feedback this coming Monday, so we are looking forward to that.  We met with Luke on Monday and delved into Google Credentials and SQLite databases.   Just as luck would have it the fire alarm went off in the middle of our meeting so we all had to get out of the building quickly.  However we grabbed our laptops and continued going.  I don’t think I’ve heard fire alarms that loud in my life..seriously it was painful.  We did make a lot of progress on Monday, but Tuesday proved to be even more fruitful.

Tuesday

Tuesday was the day we had been waiting for.  It was the day that we finally got the code running!!!!! I think it deserves all of the exclamation points because the struggle was so real.   We were so excited that we went out for celebratory Chinese food for lunch.  The issue that we found was that the Async tasks were being called before the phone was being connected to Google Credentials.  We commented out a section of code and it finally ran.  We then split up and I worked on the implementation of the survey questions while Devon worked on the database.  These projects are still in progress, but we are making significant steps forward.

Wednesday

A large part of this day was spent researching.  I was researching the seek bar in Android Studio and its limitations.  I had wanted to implement pictures instead of integers into the bar, but I didn’t find a way possible…at least not on the internet.  The maximum and progress components of the seek bar must be integers per Android Studio, so I am still currently figuring out a way to manipulate that.  We also had the ProHealth workshop on Wednesday.  This workshop dealt a lot with Peer Reviewing and how to be an effective peer reviewer.  This skill was especially useful as one of the ProHealth deliverables for the week was to peer review another individual’s paper.  Wednesday was Vanessa’s 20th birthday.  Olivia organized a surprise party at lunch and we all ate pizza, cake and cupcakes.  Vanessa seemed really happy and surprised.  I have included pictures below.  In the evening a lot of the ProHealth students went out to dinner at Red Lobster.  I got the seaside shrimp trio (shown below) and not only was it delicious at dinner time but also for lunch the next day.

Thursday

On Thursday, Devon and I focused on the remaining ProHealth deliverable, the peer review, as well as looked at the issue with the database.  Although Devon and I are writing one collective paper, we each get the opportunity to peer review another ProHealth student’s paper.  I spent a significant amount of time (2 hours) on the peer review, so I hope that my feedback is helpful!  We also explored the database issues, however unfortunately we did not get anything resolved and planned to ask Dr. Connelly in our meeting on Friday.  In addition to what we worked on today, it was also Tangee’s birthday.  I organized a surprise dinner for her at Ami with a lot of the ProHealth people and it was a fun time.  The main entree I got was delicious as was the tempura ice cream.  I have included some pictures from the evening.

Friday

Friday will be a busy day as usual, but will hopefully result in some answers.  We will have the ProHealth weekly meeting at 10am.  Then at 11am, Devon and I plan to ask Dr. Connelly about our questions with Android Studio and the app during our meeting.  Then we will continue implementation and perhaps have time to read some of the articles Majdah gave us.  If we don’t have time then we will read the various articles this weekend and if not then definitely next week.      ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
