Day 2

5/24/16

Savannah’s Daily Reflection

Today we were given an overview and background knowledge on IRB & Ethics. Then we played around a bit with Tableau which is an awesome data visualization software. We learned a few different observation (qualitative shadowing). We also were taught how to use helpful tools such as Github and  ShareLatex. Lastly, Patrick Talk and Sriraam introduced their research programs; Facebook Extension and prevention of heart attacks. I plan to choose the top three research programs that interest me on Thursday.

Task: Object Mapping Observation

The use of cell phones
Location: The Union

Subjects
Holder = H = > Subject 1
Laptop = L => Subject 2
Other = O => Subject 3
K=> Subject 4

0-1 Minute => O: Phone is sitting on the table with head phones attached.

(mostlikely due to eating)

1-2 Minute => O: Same as above. Appears to be reading or watching while scrolling.

Laptop: Holding phone in hand with laptop alittle further back

2-3 Minute => Holder: Observed someone eating while holding their cell in one hand and

 spoon in the other

3-4 Minute => H: The individual holding her phone appears to be watching something on her                                 cell.

Laptop : Individual with laptop appears to be watching something on her                                          computer and texting periodically

4-5 Minute => Holder: Phone case is red soft and a little thin

Laptop: I can’t see her case from the angle I am at. Her head phones are red                                     buds.

5-6 Minute => H: She switched hands she was holding her phone in in order to sip her drink.                                   (she did not sit her cell down)

L: Continuously switching her attention between her cell and laptop

6-7 Minute => H: There isn’t any stickers or personalization on phone other than case.

L: Laptop has most of her attention

7-8 Minute => H: She is laughing often. Apparently what she is watching is funny.

L: She kind of has a serious facial expression. Well it just switched to more of a                              confused look for a second, she was probably thinking.

8-9 Minute => H: She has an iphone.

L: She has lifted her phone, I can see she has a black soft phone case.

9-10 Minute => H: She has not been using headphones this entire time. I am about 3 seats over                             and I can’t hear anything.

L: Sitting relaxed and calm while watching her laptop. (Waiting to receive a text                                or notification.)

10-11 Minute => H: she has positioned her phone leaning on her coffee cup in order to pick up                                  her bowl and spoon with both hands

L: Not much change

11-12 Minute => H: I don’t think there is any sound. She appears to just be watching the

picture.

12-13 Minute => A group of guys walked in all holding their cells in their hand. But were not                                       using them.

13-14 Minute => L: Her phone is an iphone.

14-15 Minute => Smart phones seem to be worked into everyday task using multitasking.

15-16 Minute => H: Paused whatever she was watching to throw away tray

16-17 Minute => L: Her phone is still on the table, she only lifts it when she has a notification

17-18 Minute => K: Appears to be browsing a site (could be social media), he does not have a                                     phone case or any personalization. His phone is silver

18-19 Minute => K: Not making much of a face expression. I guess what he is looking at is not                                    that interesting

19-20 Minute => L: She still doesn’t have much of a change. She is watching her laptop and has                                  headphones in her ear.

K: He is holding his phone in his right hand, browsing with his thumb.

  • If the data above is used in research it would be considered exempt because it’s public observation where no one expects to have privacy. But this is a homework assignment not intended for research so I would say it does not need IRB approval.
